People always say ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ and people often forgot about the next widely distributed and produced fruit, orange. The commercial oranges are known as sweet oranges that is a hybrid between pomelo and mandarin from the citrus species.
Fun fact: Did you know the citrus fruit was named ‘orange’ first before the colour?
Oranges typically can be made into other products like orange juice, orange oil (in the perfume industry), marmalade and etc. The common fact about oranges may be that it is filled with Vitamin C that is good for our body but little did we know that oranges have other health benefits too.
1. Protects against cancer
Oranges contain phytochemicals and are rich in citrus limonoids that is proven to help fight cancer. This includes skin, lung, breast, stomach and colon cancers.
2. Prevents kidney diseases
When consumed in moderate amounts and at regular time intervals, orange juice prevents kidney diseases and reduces the risk of kidney stones.
3. Lowers cholesterol
Oranges are full with soluble fiber that is helpful in lowering cholesterol.
4. Boosts heart health
In cases where people develop abnormal heart rhythm, known as an arrhythmia, it is said to be due to low levels of potassium in the body. Oranges will be able to prevent this as it is full of potassium, an electrolyte mineral responsible for helping the heart to function well.
5. Fights liver cancer
Especially mandarin oranges are proven to reduce the chance of liver cancer because of the compounds called carotenoids that are found in both the oranges as well as part of the structure of Vitamin A.
6. Fights against viral infections
Studies show that the abundance of polyphenols in oranges protect against viral infections.
7. Relieves constipation
Other than soluble fiber, oranges are filled with dietary fiber too that stimulates digestive juices and relieves constipation.
8. Protects skin
Antioxidants are known to protect the cells from damage and oranges contains beta-carotene, which is a powerful antioxidant that protects skin from free radicals and helps prevent the signs of aging.
9. Regulates high blood pressure
Oranges contain flavonoid hesperidin and magnesium that help regulate high blood pressure and maintain blood pressure respectively.
10. Protects vision
Carotenoid compounds which are converted to Vitamin A found in oranges help prevent macular degeneration.
