In your interview with us earlier, you had mentioned that PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome) can be cured using TCM. What is the treatment approach of TCM for this condition?

PCOS has no cure. However, TCM treatments can improve PCOS symptoms like infertility, irregular menstrual period, acne, obesity, so on and so forth.

PCOS is affecting many young women today, what could be the reason?

The main reason of causing PCOS is still not known yet. No consensus is reached among the scientists and researchers. Some blame it to individual lifestyle, some relate it with environmental factors, while some others think it is a genetic problem.

PCOSWhat are the signs and symptoms of PCOS?

Signs and symptoms of PCOS include:

i. irregular or no menstrual periods
ii. heavy periods
iii. infertility
iv. obesity
v. excess body and facial hair
vi. acne
vii. patches of thick, darker, velvety skin

When must the patient consult a physician?

i. When you have difficulty in getting pregnant
ii. When your manses has become irregular/abnormal
iii. When your insulin level is high and become obese
iv. When you have any symptom as stated in Q3, of which has caused negative impacts to daily life

How important is acupuncture for curing PCOS?

Clinical studies show that acupuncture is able to adjust the release of endocrine, such as LH and FSH, and restore the balance of hypothalamic – pituitary – ovarian axis. Hence, it improves the ovarian functions and help to regulate a better menstrual cycle. Acupuncture therapy will also help in enhancing the quality of follicles and uterine lining.

What lifestyle changes must be made by someone who has PCOS?

i. More exercise
ii. Weight control
iii. Healthy diet, avoid food with high sugar / fat
iv. Quit smoking
v. Avoid emotional distress
