David Bowie, the legendary musician, with the ability to reinvent his music and public persona, has died at the age of 69 years old. He ended his 18 months battle with cancer.
Sensor May Detect Cancer From Breath
According to the Japan News, individuals may be able to easily check their health through a sensor that is connected to a smartphone or other device. The sensor allows for early detection, reducing substantial national health expenditure, and potentially saving millions of lives. Lives like David Bowie’s could have been saved.
Japan’s National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) has been working with Kyocera Corp., Sumitomo Seika Chemicals Co., Osaka University and a precision equipment maker in Switzerland to put the sensor into practical use.
How Does The Sensor Work?
A person exhales into the sensor that is connected to a smartphone. The sensor can identify if the person’s breath contains odor that is unique to a cancer’s patient’s breath. The results of the odor will be sent to the screen of the smartphone.

If the sensor’s accuracy is improved and data on odor is collected, the sensor may be able to specify the cancer type of a person.
Why Cancer Patients Have Different Breath
Tumors generate very low concentrations of the alkanes and aromatic compounds that can be detected via urine or breath. Scientists also proven that different illnesses can be detected by different odors. There are scientists in Italy trained two dogs to “sniff out” prostate cancer with more than 90% accuracy.
When Will The Sensor Be Available In The Market?
It will take estimate 7 years to develop the device, however good news is that it can be produced in large quantities, and thus the public can buy the device at few hundred dollars price.
