10 Facts – Guess the killer?

  1. There is an emerging global epidemic that can be traced back to rapid increases in overweight, obesity and physical inactivity.
  2. Total deaths are projected to rise by more than 50% in the next 10 years. Most notably, they are projected to increase by over 80% in upper-middle income countries.
  3. Type I of this disease is characterized by a lack of insulin production. Type II results from the body´s ineffective use of insulin.
  4. Type II is much more common than type I, and accounts for around 90% of all cases worldwide.
  5. Reports of type II in children – previously rare – have increased worldwide. In some countries, it accounts for almost half of newly diagnosed cases in children and adolescents.
  6. A third type is called gestational. This type is characterized by hyperglycaemia, or raised blood sugar, which is first recognized during pregnancy.
  7. There were 3.3 million cases in Malaysia in 2015.
  8. 80% of deaths due to this disease are now occurring in low- and middle-income countries.
  9. Lack of awareness about this disease, combined with insufficient access to health services, can lead to complications such as blindness, amputation and kidney failure.
  10. It can be prevented. Thirty minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on most days and a healthy diet can drastically reduce the risk of developing type II.

Well, you guessed it right! It is indeed Diabetes Mellitus!!

Definition of Diabetes:

DIABETES refers to a group of diseases that affect how your body uses glucose (blood sugar). Glucose is crucial for the cells as a source of energy the body needs. Diabetes means that the value of glucose in your blood is too high and can lead to serious health issues. People who are suffering from Diabetes type II still do have a well working pancreas that is producing enough Insulin. However, the problem here are the cells itself. They are not able to recognize the insulin and as a result of that do not transfer the glucose into the centre of the cell. The sugar stays in in the blood and leads to a high blood sugar level.

Symptoms of Diabetes:

  • Ravenous appetite
  • Extreme thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Weight loss
  • Tiredness and Power loss
  • Blurred vision
  • Irritability

Causes of Diabetes:

  • Lack of Exercise
  • Poor Nutrition:
    • Too much carbohydrate-containing foods
    • Sugar-containing drinks
    • Lots of white flour.
  • Overweight (Studies show that 65-70% of overweight people suffer from insulin resistance)

The above increases the blood sugar level above average. As a result of that the pancreas is in need of producing more and more insulin to transport the high amounts of sugar to the cells. With a combination of a lack of exercise an individual does not need this high amount of energy provided by the masses of sugar. That results in a surplus of sugar the cells do not need. After years this can lead to insulin resistance of the cells.getdoc-promo2

  • The most important measure is to avoid industrially manufactured sugar as much as possible. That this kind of sugar damages the human body in different ways is universally known, but the effect on Diabetes type II patient is much worse.
  • Fructose has seen as healthy for decades. But even this kind of sugar benefits Diabetes type II.
  • Change to more basic nutrition
    • Eat more: Nuts, oaks, rungs, millet, Quinoa, Buckwheat. Especially high quality organic products can help
    • Eat less: convenience food
  • Lose weight
  • Do more sports
  • Sunbathing for Vitamin D
  • Eat less meat
  • Eat more probiotics e.g. Yoghurt
  • Drink more water (2-3litres a day)
  • Eat food containing minerals like magnesium, zinc and chromium
