Doubling up on Eyelids

There is a famous saying that goes a little something like this. “Your eyes are the windows to your soul. They shout out what your lips are always afraid to say”. This quote would be suitable for this topic as we will be talking about double eye-lid surgery, or commonly known as blepharoplasty.

What is it?

In an Asian context, going under the knife to get double eye-lids is a procedure that is becoming extremely common. As we brave across a more modernized society, society in general would get ahead in line for any chance to enhance their natural state for what they deem as “better” or more “acceptable”. Although double eye-lid surgery or scientifically known as blepharoplasty has been around for quite some time now, recently it seems to have elevated itself in terms of popularity and the number of people who actually get double eye-lid surgeries done.

One country where blepharoplasty is outrageously popular is South Korea. In a society where it is said that every one in five girls within the age group of 19-49 has gotten some kind of plastic surgery done, this would hardly be an unbelievable fact. As a matter of fact, South Korea has overtaken Brazil for having the most number of surgeries done per capita. One reason why Asian woman go under the knife to have this surgery done is to look more westernized. Asian woman have for long idolized the idea of beauty and they perceive western beauty as the ultimate standard for it.

Know how it’s done

This surgery is generally done by cutting a fold into the eyelid to create a double fold which will in turn widen the eyes. Upper blepharoplasty surgery uses incisions on the skin to allow for removal of skin and fat. A thin stitch is then used to bring the skin together to allow for a creation of an eyelid crease. Many patients of Asian descent have an anatomically distinct upper lid appearance, commonly referred to as a ‘single fold’. Either a lack of a lid crease above the lid margin, or a very low-lying lid crease characterizes this appearance. Most Asians view a ‘single fold’ to be less attractive, when compared to the more westernized (Caucasian) appearance of a ‘double fold’ lid.

This procedure is considered low risk as it can be done approximately in an hour in general. Sometimes, though, the pull to get the surgery isn’t an aesthetic one. Some stars that have gone under the knife to get a blepharoplasty include Korean sensation Hyuna and Na-Eun of the girl group A PINK. If not for aesthetic reasons, blepharoplasty is done for a medical condition called ptosis, as well as a separate cosmetic procedure to reduce the bags under the eyes.

The pursuit for timeless beauty

The pursuit of Asians in the never-ending desire to look or fit into a more westernized ‘look’ will continue being the norm, given the current craze of looking youthful as the pinnacle of the idea beauty. The more a culture worships the idea of beauty in which they do not belong to, they begin loving themselves less and start thinking of what they can do to appear more attractive. This is when sometimes drastic measures are taken to look more aesthetically appealing.

It is important that we love ourselves just as we are because only then will we be able to grasp the concept of being confident and content with ourselves. Aesthetically enhancing oneself can only do so much in the determination of our life’s worth as an individual, as character plays a more important role in defining an individual. As the saying goes, “beauty fades but character remains.”

So, what do you guys have to say about this surgical procedure? I personally believe that everyone is entitled the right to do whatever it takes to make them feel and perform better. Having said that, i also believe that as individuals, we owe it to ourselves to embrace who we are, just as we are.
