From time to time, we do hear cases of Malaysians consuming too much of sweet but up to what extent are we well-informed about it? We do have options for ‘less sugar’ when we order our ‘teh tarik’ or even our ‘ais kacang’. However, the reality is that we still continue to consume drinks which are high in sugar content despite the countless warnings and campaigns being pulled off here and there.
I did a little research and sorted the following table below to show you a summary of how much sugar you may be consuming from these drinks which are commonly available in Malaysia.

Of course, we should also not forget to include another type of drink which can be seen as a staple drink in our daily lives: Starbucks. A campaign group called Action on Sugar recently carried out an analysis in the UK on the content of several beverages including the ones in Starbucks. 98% of the 131 hot-flavoured drinks shown a red nutritional value label for high sugar content with a third of them possessing similar or more amounts of sugar than Coca-Cola. Kawther Hashem of Action on Sugar cited that drinks like Starbucks should be consumed on an occasional basis rather than as an everyday drink. The following table would show you which flavour of Starbucks and its dangerously high sugar content.

I personally do not consume too much of sweetened drinks but I sure do know a great number of people around me who do. With diabetes becoming more common among Malaysians, consumption of sweet food should be reduced! What do you think? Do you have a sweet tooth?
