What does a Respirologist (Pulmonologist) do?
Doctors in respiratory medicine diagnose and treat conditions affecting the respiratory (breathing) system, for example nose, throat (pharynx), larynx, the windpipe (trachea), the lungs and the diaphragm. Respirologists are specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of lung disease, such as asthma, emphysema, or pneumonia. They perform tests to check how well a person is breathing. And they may use procedures such as bronchoscopy to diagnose a breathing problem. With this information, respiratory specialists can make treatment recommendations, including both short and long term plans for management of respiratory conditions. Treatments can include the use of devices such as CPAP machines for apnoea, or the administration of medications to manage respiratory function.
