Neurosurgeons perform neurosurgery related to any portion of the nervous system including brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and the extra-cranial cerebrovascular system. Neurosurgeons go through years of post graduate specialized training, often focusing on a particular sub-specialty, such as brain surgery in thrombotic strokes or brain aneurysm, brain tumor and brain injuries or spine surgery associated with the nervous system & movement.
Some of the conditions diagnosed and surgically operated on by neurosurgeons include removing brain tumor, spinal tumor, autoimmune brain and spinal condition, trauma to the brain and spine (e.g. accidents, contusions, hematomas,), brain abscesses or complicated meningitis.
Symptoms suggestive of spinal conditions include constant back and neck pains while brain conditions (such as brain cancer) are indicated by chronic headaches, photophobia and behavioral disorders. Back pains may also be caused by fracture of the vertebra injuring the spine. Spine surgery includes cervical spine surgery, discectomy, a surgical removal of the whole or a part of an intervertebral disc; and kyphoplasty is a surgical procedure that expands and stabilizes compression fractures of the spine. It is a type of vertebral augmentation surgery. Decompressive laminectomy, which relieves pressure on the spinal nerve roots, is the most common procedure for relieving spinal stenosis.
Neurosurgeons will work with Radiologists who will use CT scans, MRIs, PET scans, EEGs, EMGs, and digital subtraction angiography (DSA) for brain scans etc. All of these and more are ordered by the neurosurgeon as part of investigations.
